WHAT IS HATTIFNATT CAFE |
About an 8 minute walk from the hustle and bustle of Kichijoji station, you will find a cafe with an exterior that looks like it was taken out from an episode in “Moomin” or so says the twittering of Twitter users as this cafe made rounds on Japan’s social media world. Indeed, it stands out from the rest, with it’s warm lights, pastel colors and over-all kawaii atmosphere.
The exterior looks inviting as it is but wait till you see its 130 cm door that makes you feel like you’re in Alice’s Wonderland, it’s so small that you’d have to duck a little when entering. Then, you’d have to climb the stairs to their second floor and be surrounded by wall paintings commissioned from Japanese picture book authors Mayu Shinozaki and Tomohiro Noda who goes by their unit name: Marini Monteany.
THE MENU |
Their menu mainly contains pizza, tacos and gratin. They also offer an ample selection of desserts and drinks to go with it.
This is gratin with tomato sauce, topped with bacon slices and melted cheese. It’s savory, fiery because they make their food per order so when it’s fresh out of the over when it arrives on you table. Let it cool down a little before digging in because you may just burn your throat. This menu is one of their vegan-friendly meals, It’s main ingredient is eggplant, calabrese and rice. It also contains melted cheese but is significantly lesser than the Tomato Carbo Gratin. This is one of their signature drinks that comes with their original latter art, it has a rich matcha flavored milk that might just make you forget your name. This one has a rich bitter chocolate taste with a chewy texture. It looks small but it’s very filling because of its thick flavor. I think people who likes healthy dark chocolates will definitely love this! Well lets just say I’d be biased if I make an opinion about this because I am 100% a cheesecake lover. This one though feel like it’s topped with a thin layer of gelatin that helped to tame the cheesecake’s flavor, especially it’s sweetness. People like my husband who doesn’t like desserts that are too sweet will like this for sure! This drink’s main ingredient is strawberry flavored soda with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and frozen raspberry on top, seriously, what can go wrong? For our side dish we chose this marinated octopus which was served cold and was really delicious, it gave a bit of a good shock to our taste buds and is well recommended if you visit the cafe. THE EXPERIENCE We arrived about 2 PM on a weekend and Hattifnatt cafe’s waiting time was about: 30 minutes to 45 minutes but overall, we had a great experience in the cafe, aside from the food we also an enjoyed listening to the songs they playEd inside the cafe which were mostly praise songs. They also have a unique system of transporting food from the first floor to the second floor which includes a manual dumbwaiter. If there’s one thing i noticed, it’s that said from me there were no other foreigners in the line so I was thinking that this cafe isn’t that well known to foreign visitors yet.
