Tagalog and Japanese Conversation Lesson 2: Greeting in Japanese/タガログ語で挨拶

Today, I would like to teach you common expressions for greeting or doing an Aisatsu in Japanese.
I will be using the Tagalog language and the Japanese language:
フィリピンのタガログ語と日本語の「挨拶」に関する内容を以下にまとめました。

First of all, I would like to introduce some of the phrases I often use when greeting someone.
まずは、自己紹介の時によく使うフレーズを紹介いたします。

Frequently used greetings / よく使う挨拶のフレーズ

In the morning

• おはようございます「ohayougozaimasu」
• Magandang umaga「マガンダン　ウマガ」
• Good morning

In the afternoon 

• こんにちは「konnichiwa」
• Magandang tanghali「マガンダン タンハリ」、Magandang hapon「マガンダン ハーポン」
• Hello

In the evening 

•  こんばんは「konban wa」
•  Magandang gabi「マガンダン　ガビ」
•  Good evening

Saying goodnight

•  おやすみなさい「oyasumi nasai」
•  Nawa’y maka tulog ka nang mahimbing 「ナワイ　マカ　トゥログ　カ　ナン　マヒムビン」
•  Good night

NOTE: Filipinos usually just say “Goodnight” so it is acceptable to just say “Goodnight” all the time

Saying goodbye (Formal)

• さようなら「sayounara」
• Paalam! 「パアラム」
• Goodbye!

Saying goodbye(Casual)

• またね「matane」、じゃあね「zya-ne」
• Aalis na ako「アアリス　ナ　アコ」、Sige「シゲ」
• Bye, See you, See you later

NOTE: Filipinos usually just say “Bye” so it is acceptable to just say “Bye” all the time

Saying goodbye(You may also use)

• またお会いしましょう「mata oai shimashou」
• Hanggang sa muli「ハンガン　サ　ムリ」
• See you again

NOTE: Filipinos usually just say “See you again” so it is acceptable to just say “See you again” all the time

Meeting an acquaintance (Formal)

• お会いできて嬉しいです「oaidekite ureshiidesu」
• Masaya akong makita ka「マサヤ　アコン　マキタ　カ」
• I am glad to see you

NOTE: Filipinos often use: “Nice to see you!” in this situation.

Meeting an acquaintance (Casual)

• お元気ですか「ogenki desu ka」
• Kumusta ka?「カムスタ　カ」
• How are you?

Positive Response

• 元気です「genki desu」
• Mabuti naman po「マブティ　ナマン　ポ」、Ok lang「オーケラン」
• I’m fine

Negative Response

• 元気ではないです「genki dewanai desu」
• Hindi Mabuti「ヒンディ マブティ」
• I am not fine

Thank You

•  ありがとうございます「arigatou gozaimasu」
•  Salamat「サラマットゥ」
•  Thank you

To Convey More Thankfulness

• 本当にありがとうございます「hontou ni arigatougozaimasu」
• Maraming salamat po「マラミン サラマッポ」
• Thank you very much

When Apologizing

• すみません/ごめんなさい「sumimasen/gomennasai」
• Paumanhin「パウマンヒン」
•  I am sorry

NOTE: Filipinos usually say: “I’m so sorry” (formal) or “Sorry” (casual) when apologizing to someone

When Encouraging

•  頑張ってください「ganbatte kudasai」
•  Kaya mo yan!「カヤ　モ　ヤン」
• You can do it

When Praising A Person For His Hard Work

•  お疲れ様でした「otsukaresama deshita」
•  Salamat sa iyong masipag na pag trabaho「サラマト　サ　イヨン　マシパグ　ナ　パグ　タラバホ」
•  Good job

NOTE: Filipinos usually say “Good job!”, so it’s okay to use this expression always

New Year Greetings

•  明けましておめでとうございます「akemashite omedetougozaimasu」
•  Manigong Bagong Taon「マニゴン　バゴン　タオン」
•  Happy new year

NOTE: Filipinos also use “Happy New Year”

Christmas Greetings

•  メリークリスマス「meri-kurisumasu」
• Maligayang Pasko「マリガーヤン パスコ」
• Merry Christmas

When Arriving at Home (Your home)

•  ただいま「tadaima」
•  Nandito na po ako「ナンディト　ナ　ポ　アコ」
•  I am home

Greeting the Person Who Came Home

•  おかえりなさい「okaerinasai」
•  Mabuti at nandito ka na「マブティ　アットゥ　ナンディト　カ　ナ」
•  How was your day?

When Thanking Someone Who Invited You To Their Home

• お邪魔します「ozyama shimasu」
•  Salamat sa pag imbita 「サラマト　サ　パグ　インビタ」、Salamat sa imbitasyon「サラマト　サ　インビタショーン」
• Thank you for inviting me

Before Meals

•  いただきます「itadakimasu」

After Meals

•  ごちそうさまでした「gochisousamadeshita」

Vocabulary Words/ 単語

• 元気「genki」 / mabuti「マブティ」 / fine
• いいえ「iie」 / Hindi「ヒンディ」 / not（否定するときに使用、Used to deny）
• 会う「au」 / makilala「マキララ」/meet
• 嬉しい「ureshii」 / masaya「マサヤ」 / glad
• たくさんの「takusan no」/Maraming「マラミン」 / many
• ありがとう「arigatou」 / Salamat 「サラマト」 / Thank you
• 頑張る「ganbaru」 / Kaya ko to!「カヤコト」 / To do my best
• 疲れる「tsukareru」 / masipag na pag trabaho「マシパグ　ナ　パグ　トラバホ」 / hard work
• おめでとうございます「omedetou gozaimasu」/Binabati kita「ビナバティ　キタ」/congratulations

Points To Remember

• In Japan, in response to  “明けましておめでとうございます「akemashiteo omedetougozaimasu」”, people usually say “今年もよろしくお願いします「kotoshi mo yoroshiku onegaishimasu」”
• “Po” is an expression often used at the end of a Filipino greeting to add respect or fomality to the sentence.タガログ語では、「Po」を挨拶の最後につけることで、より丁寧な表現になります。
